CSIS Usability Designer/ Engineer
This position is located in Sacramento, CA
SALARY & BENEFITS:
$6,272 – $7,602 per month. Maximum entry level is $6,904 per month. Holiday, sick leave and vacation benefits are provided. Prepaid medical, dental, vision, and counseling plans provided for employee and family. Prepaid life insurance policy provided for the employee. Employees of this office are not covered by Social Security, but do have mandatory retirement coverage with Public Employees Retirement System (PERS). This position is located in Sacramento, CA.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Under general supervision, contributes to the overall communications strategy of the organization by planning and executing web design, programming and analysis tasks supporting web sites and applications maintained by the California School Information Services (CSIS) for program staff, local education agencies, the California Department of Education, and other interested stakeholders.
- Defines usability strategies and ensures consistency in graphical user interface (GUI) based on usability goals, focus groups, task analysis, cognitive walkthroughs, heuristics and other techniques to ensure a positive client experience.
- Creates vector graphics and standards for design, site navigation, layout of content (e.g., accessibility, fonts, formatting, icons, images, templates, etc.) that are clear, effective, and contributes to the overall communications strategy of the organization and strengthens brand recognition.
- Implements designs for web sites and applications using themes for enterprise content management systems and other custom software applications.
QUALIFICATIONS:
- Education requires graduation from an accredited college or university with a major in information technology, multimedia and visual communication, web design and interactive media, or a related field. Work experience resulting in an equivalent knowledge base may be substituted for the major requirement.
- A minimum of 2 years experience in web design and implementation during which the candidate demonstrated solid grasp of graphic, web and software design principles as well as the limitations associated with these environments.
- Experience in software design, analysis, and development experience which includes cross-browser and cross-platform environment (Internet Explorer, Firefox, Safari on Microsoft Windows, Mac, etc.).
- Experience using tools such as:
- Illustrator, Photoshop, Visio for prototypes, wireframes, and interactive mockups.
- Windows Server SharePoint Services, SharePoint as content management systems.
- Google analytics for heuristics.
- Knowledge of communications, marketing and business principles and exhibits critical thinking skills including problem solving, decision making, and analysis in a Web 2.0/Enterprise 2.0 environment.

Each candidate’s application papers will be thoroughly evaluated and ranked by a screening committee appointed by the Kern County Superintendent of Schools Office. Candidates achieving a rating of 70% or better will qualify to continue in the eligibility screening process with an interview scheduled the week of January 16, 2011. Interviews will be held at the California School Information Services Office, 770 L Street, Ste. 1120, Sacramento, CA 95814.
CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT:
Some positions may require proof of privately owned automobile insurance and possess a valid California Motor Vehicle operator’s license. Fingerprint clearance by the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the California Department of Justice is a condition of appointment after all other required job conditions have been met. This position has a probationary period of six months or 130 days in paid service, whichever is longer.
